Best Small Handset Phones in the UK: Compact Smartphones Compared

    July 27, 2026

As smartphone screens have grown larger year after year, finding a genuinely small handset has become surprisingly difficult. Many people simply want a phone that fits comfortably in one hand or a small pocket, without needing a 6.7 inch display to get through the day. This guide looks at the best small handset options currently available in the UK.

Why small handsets are harder to find

Manufacturers have leaned heavily into larger displays over the past decade, partly because bigger screens improve video, gaming and camera viewfinder experiences, and partly because battery technology benefits from the extra internal space a larger chassis provides. As a result, most flagship and mid-range phones now sit between 6.1 and 6.8 inches, leaving relatively few genuinely compact options on the market.

    Compact smartphone options

Among current smartphones, Apple’s smaller iPhone models remain some of the most consistently compact flagship options available, typically staying under 6.1 inches while still offering full flagship performance. On the Android side, compact flagship options appear far less often, and models tend to come and go between generations, so it is always worth checking current availability before committing to a specific small Android phone.

Classic small handsets for calls and texts

If the priority is simply a small, pocketable phone for calls and texts rather than apps and cameras, a basic keypad phone is by far the smallest option available. Brands such as Nokia, TTfone and Doro all sell compact keypad handsets that are noticeably smaller and lighter than any modern smartphone, making them a popular secondary phone for festivals, holidays, or situations where a large smartphone would be impractical.

What you give up with a smaller phone

Smaller handsets almost always mean a smaller battery, since there is simply less internal space available. This can result in shorter battery life compared with larger phones, particularly under heavy use. Smaller screens can also make some tasks, such as watching video or typing long messages, feel more cramped, so it is worth weighing pocketability against everyday usability based on personal habits.

Who a small handset suits best

Small handsets tend to suit people with smaller hands, anyone who finds large phones uncomfortable to use one-handed, and those who simply prefer a more minimal, pocket-friendly device. They are also popular as a secondary phone, work phone, or a deliberate step away from a feature-heavy main smartphone.

Accessories that help a small handset go further

A compact phone can be made more practical with the right accessories. A slim case adds minimal bulk while still offering some protection, and a portable battery pack is worth carrying if the phone’s smaller battery cannot comfortably last a full day of heavy use. For anyone using a small handset specifically for calls, texts and light browsing, these two accessories alone are usually enough to offset most of the practical downsides of choosing a genuinely compact device.

It is also worth checking screen resolution rather than just physical size when comparing compact phones, since a smaller display with a sharp resolution can still feel comfortable to read from, while a similarly sized screen with a lower resolution may feel noticeably less crisp for text and browsing.

Battery packs designed specifically for smaller phones are also worth a mention, since some slimline power banks are now sized to match compact handsets closely, allowing a small phone and its charging backup to be carried together in a pocket without adding significant bulk, which rather defeats the purpose of choosing a compact phone in the first place.

A quick call to your chosen network or retailer to confirm exact dimensions and weight before ordering online is always a sensible final step.

    Final thoughts

Genuinely small handsets are a shrinking category, but they have not disappeared entirely. Compact flagship smartphones remain available for those wanting full smartphone functionality in a smaller shell, while classic keypad phones offer an even smaller, simpler alternative for anyone whose needs are limited to calls and texts.
